Basic Fractions Understanding – One Third Fraction

Fraction

A Fraction represents a part of a whole.

One third fraction is represented as follows.

One third represents 1 of 3 equal parts of the whole.

The number on the top is called a numerator and represents the part out of the whole and the number at the bottom represents the whole.

1. Image given below shows a shape made up of three equal size hexagons. Part of the shape area is shaded. Does the shape shown in the image below has one third of its area shaded?

Yes, the shape shown here has one third of its area shaded. The shape is made up of 3 equal hexagonal shapes and one of them is shaded. So 1 of 3 equal parts is shaded, that is one third of the area is shaded.

2. The image given below shows two rectangular shapes. Both the rectangular shapes have a part of there area shaded. Which one of the two shapes shown below has one third of its area shaded?

The rectangle shown on the right side is divided into 3 parts but the 3 parts shown are not equal parts. So it is not clear what fraction of area is shaded for the rectangle shown on the right side. However, since the shaded part is smaller in size than the other parts that does imply that less than one third of the area is shaded.

The rectangle shown on the left side is divided into three equal parts and 1 of the 3 parts is shaded. So one of the three equal parts is shaded that is one thirds of the area is shaded for the rectangle shown on the left side.
