Steps to compare two numbers

To compare two numbers, compare the digits at the highest place value first, the number with the bigger digit at highest place value is bigger, if the digits at highest place value are same in both the numbers then compare the digits at next highest place value and so on.

Is 389 less than or greater than 712?

In 389, digit 3 is at hundreds place, 8 is at tens place and 9 is at ones place.

In 712, digit 7 is at hundreds place, 1 is at tens place and 2 is at ones place.

Comparing the digits with the higher place value first, 3 < 7.

389 is less than 712.

389  <  712

Is 581 less than or greater than 549?

In 581, digit 5 is at hundreds place, 8 is at tens place and 1 is at ones place.

In 549, digit 5 is at hundreds place, 4 is at tens place and 9 is at ones place.

Comparing the digits with the highest place value first, both the numbers have 5 at the hundreds place. 

Comparing the digits at next highest place value.

8 > 4. Eight is greater than four.

581 is greater than 549.
