Perimeter of Rectangle - Formula & Examples

Perimeter of a Polygon

Perimeter of a polygon is the sum of the lengths of all the sides of a polygon.

A quadrilateral is a 4 sided polygon and a rectangle is a specific type of a quadrilateral.

The perimeter of a rectangle is equal to the sum of the lengths of all the 4 sides.

In case of a rectangle opposite sides are equal, the longer side is known as length and the shorter side is known as the width or the breadth of rectangle.

So the formula to calculate the perimeter of a rectangle is 2 times the length plus 2 times the width of the rectangle.

P = Perimeter of rectangle
L = Length of rectangle
W = Width of rectangle

P = 2 x Length + 2 x Width
P = 2L + 2W

Since 2 is a common factor, this can also be written as follows

P = 2*(L + W)

What is the perimeter of a rectangle that has a length of 12 cm and the width of 8cm?

P = Perimeter of rectangle
L = Length of rectangle
W = Width of rectangle

P = 2*(L + W)

Here, L + W = 12 + 8 = 20 cm

P = 2 x 20 cm = 40 cm

Perimeter of this rectangle = 40 cm

What is a perimeter of a rectangle with the length equal to 10 cm and the width equal to 7cm?

P = Perimeter of rectangle
L = Length of rectangle
W = Width of rectangle

P = 2*(L + W)

L + W = 10 + 7 = 17

P = 2 x 17 cm = 34 cm

Perimeter of this rectangle = 2 x 17cm = 34 cm
