The position of a digit in a number determines the value that digit holds. This position value is referred as place value. For example the image given below shows the place value of the three digits in the number 485.




485 = 400 + 80 + 5

485 = 4 x 100 + 8 x 10 + 5 x 1


In the number 485, digit 4 is at hundreds place, 8 is at tens place and 5 is at ones place.

The rightmost digit 5 is the digit at ones place, its value corresponds to the digit multiplied by 1.

The second digit from the right 8 is the digit at tens place, its value corresponds to the digit multiplied by 10.

The third digit from the right 4, is the digit at hundreds place, its value corresponds to the digit multiplied by 100.

In number 572 what is the place value of the digit 7?


572 = 500 + 70 + 2

572 = 5 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 2 x 1

In the number 572 digit 7 is at tens place value.



In number 439 what is the place value of the digit 9?



439 = 400 + 30 + 9

439 = 4 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 9 x 1

In the number 439 digit 9 is at ones place value.



In number 781 what is the place value of the digit 7?



781 = 700 + 80 + 1

781 = 7 x 100 + 8 x 10 + 1 x 1

In the number 781 digit 7 is at hundreds place value.
